Why Carpets Smell Worse After Rain and How to Fix It

A musty carpet smell after wet weather is a reason to investigate moisture, rather than cover the smell with perfume. The cause may be in the carpet, underlay or elsewhere in the room.

Check where the moisture comes from

Look for wet shoes, spills, leaks and damp areas near doors or windows. Check whether the carpet actually feels damp and whether the smell is concentrated in one place. If there is continuing water ingress, arrange for that cause to be repaired.

Avoid making the problem wetter

Do not soak the carpet with another cleaner or repeatedly shampoo an already damp area. Keep children and pets away from wet or contaminated flooring, and follow the carpet maker’s care instructions.

Ventilate when conditions allow and ask for advice if the carpet will not dry. Widespread mould or contaminated floodwater requires appropriate specialist assessment.

What a carpet cleaner can assess

We can discuss existing products, previous accidents and whether contamination may have reached the backing or underlay. A surface clean will not always solve an odour coming from deeper layers.

Send photographs and explain when the smell occurs. We will outline the likely approach and its limits before quoting.
